Assistance Dogs of the West graduated half a dozen canine students into service last night. The Santa Fe-based organization uses a small staff of professional trainers, who work with both dogs and more than a thousand student trainers from local schools and juvenile detention centers. There’s a simplicity to what ADW does—training dogs for people with disabilities; teaching students empathy, patience, and responsibility through training—that makes its mission easy to buy into, as evidenced by a packed convention center.
