It is very sad when a companion of 21 years passes away. Chanel, however, was not the world’s oldest dog.

I have seen dogs older than Chanel. I am a veterinarian in small animal practice. While I have seen dogs that I estimate were well over 20 years old, the oldest dog I treated with a documented age and corresponding medical records was 22 years old. At the time, I was working as a veterinary assistant the summer before entering veterinary school. This dog’s birth date actually preceded my own by several months.

Dogs, unlike people, do not have birth certificates; so, the world’s oldest dog is not likely to be known. I do know, however, that plenty of dogs are over 21 years old.
