Reporters never get tired of this storyline and people never tire of arguing over it. Are pit bulls the problem or are their owners? Animal Planet launches a new series called Pit Bulls & Parolees. Newsweek reports.

A new study out from MIT suggests that brain cells can only learn from success and not failure. This might help to explain why dogs are capable of learning complex problem-solving from positive reinforcement drills, but not through avoidance.

Found this on New Scientist, this morning. Dogs apparently sniff each other to see who’s been eating lately and then figure out where the food is based on where that dog has just been. Pretty clever.

Type 1 diabetics live with the knowledge that some night in the future they could drop into a diabetic coma, no one would know, and they could die alone in their sleep. Can a dog prevent this from happening? Can a dog warn a diabetic when his or her blood sugar is dropping into the danger zone or going too high? The simple answer is yes.

This is Forrest!
This is Forrest, my 9 mo. old black lab! Forrest is a Leo; he’s single and he loves the ladies and anything that he can find on the ground, though he is especially fond of pinecones and twigs. He’s my hiking companion, trail running companion, and has become quite good at boulder hopping and swimming. He is fearless and full of personality! Forrest has the sweetest, happiest go lucky demeanor, but has shown he is ready to step up & protect his mommy, if needed. Gotta protect his meal ticket, I guess.
I included 3 pics, because I couldn’s send 300.
The river pics are of his first swim an Fontana Lake in NC, and the other pic is of him loving on the twigs – what a face! Cute, no?
Peace & Love, Charly
- Memphis (the Akita) and Tucker (the small black mutt—Jack Russell/Lab I think) like to check on me while I’m working from home in Salem, Oregon. Sometimes, Tucker likes to do my work for me (see “Mom-I’m working!” photo).

- Kaya is a 3 year old Labrador x Rhodesian ridgeback. This dog was built to run and loves the beach off Yala National Park in Southern Sri Lanka where we live and work. She shares our jungle abode with one dog, a mongoose, and all the rest of the critters in the area: peafowl, monitor lizards, and even the odd cobra.

Cade tired from fetch. Think your dog's cuter? Prove it: letters@outsidemag.com
Cade (pronounced Kay-duh), is a 5-year-old mutt that my husband and I adopted from the Humane Society when she was six months old. She’s a Lab/Pit mix, and she loves three things in this world: the beach, tennis balls, and squirrels. So taking her to the Oregon coast to play tennis ball on the beach, off leash, is up there with sleeping under the covers in our bed—or eating peanut butter by the spoonful.
This photo was taken at the end of a long tennis ball fetching session, when she had actually worn herself out. This rarely happens.
Love the blog, Outside! Thanks for doing it!

Yep, the former Atlanta Falcons QB and dog-fighting ringleader left prison today. Here’s the slideshow the Times ran last year on Best Friends Animal Society, the Kanab, Utah, kennel that took 22 of Vick’s dogs in for rehabilitation.

“Am I supposed to be a rescue dog or not? I thought you could at least attach martini shakers to my collar and turn me loose near the pool. But it turns out there really are no emergencies here.”

IT’S getting more expensive to take Fifi on vacation. Airlines may be raising the price of in-flight food and checked luggage, but pet owners say the fees for flying with their furry friends are getting out of control.
